A short video comparing the sound of a 5" exhaust with and without a MBRP muffler (4" downpipe). I love the sound of a straight pipe but unfortunately it gets a little annoying on the freeway. The muffler is a good compromise and I really like the tone.

I'm glad I did the straight pipe for a while to see what it's like but now I wouldn't go without a muffler. It allows that nice, deep rumble to pass through and you can still hear the turbo whistle just like a straight pipe. I have the louvers in the muffler facing toward the engine. You can reverse it so it's a little louder. The truck is really loud even with the muffler, much louder than stock.

MBRP 5" mufflers are 6" round with steel mesh filling, no fiberglass (4" mufflers have fiberglass).

  • Was it a pain to get that 5" on?? I've heard it's alot worse trying to fit in a 5" compared to the 4".

  • @Hollistan It was a little harder, especially around the spare tire, but it can be done. I did it in my driveway. I would go 4" without thinking twice if I were to do it again tho.

  • does it have stock trubo?

  • @pbplayer91 Stock turbo.. Silencer ring fell out (literall). Luckily I found it before it did any damage.

  • U need bigger tires.

  • I knoww! I've been doing more burnouts so I can speed up the "wear" process. :)

  • i would have just left the 5" straight on it...mufflers are use less on diesels...you get better fuel mileage an horsepower without them

  • Sounds great! Did you notice any changes in the mpgs though?

  • any problms with lossing low end torque i always hear "dnt go that big or ull loose low end torque" is this true. Ive got the same style truck and want to do this set up with the muffler. Sounds awsome too btw

  • do get any of that annoying drone on the highway or interstate with the new muffler?

  • @BuhundredReturns Well it ain't illegal unless you get caught!

  • My 01 cummins is straight piped 3" into 5" tip, I love the sound it's my daily driver. Mufflers are gay!

  • @BuhundredReturns Hey if you read up, the turbo is considered a muffler ;)

  • @carhartbitch well Id put the mufflers back onto your gassers, they need that back pressure.

  • @Sauron767 ATS stage two tranny? Yeah probably. I'm not a huge fan of ATS parts. You can get a better transmission built from Suncoast for a lot cheaper. ATS can afford to put big ads in magazines but their parts are kinda overpriced from my experience. Not as bad as banks but still not great. Anyways tho depending on the application (if you're hauling heavy you'll need to beef it up) you may want to step up to a more solid tranny. Also as soon as you start modding get some gauges.

  • @Sauron767

no the Cummins was completely mechanical up until 98.5 when the 24v came out. Doesnt matter if it has an OBD II or not, the engine doesnt have an ECM, theres nothing electrical about the engine except the fuel shut off solenoid.

  • @EasternAggie

Well I guess I was referring to 24Vs i just know the 5.9 and the 6.7s can get mods like those, and I didn't think it mattered i thought any engine after 96 HAD to have an OBD II so obviously I figured any engine with that would have an OBD II could be tunable
