Arthur Duncan -- the King of Tap -- was honored on May 31, 2008 by the Gabriella Axelrad Education Foundation with the Gregory Hines Humanitarian Award. Duncan, 74, is being honored for his decades as the industry's quintessential song and dance man --- "the King of Tap" Lawrence Welk called him --- and for breaking racial barriers as the first African-American regular on a variety television program, "The Lawrence Welk Show," where he was a featured performer from 1964 to 1982. On the evening of his award, he performed with "everybody dance!" a routine he both choreographed and taught them. This video is a behind the scenes story on Duncan and his work with the students.

  • 48 (yikes!) years ago I lived in Switzerland in the same chalet as Arthur's wife, Donna. Arthur was touring for the USO and would show up now and then. What a great guy! If anyone knows their whereabouts or web address I'd love to make contact with them again. bschless@rasco.com

  • Saw him in person again 3/4/2010 and he is still a tremendous dancer as well as singer! What a gentleman expert entertainer! At 76, it seems impossible!
