Nuages gris (Trübe Wolken), S. 199 (1881)

A brief piece for solo piano by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886), depicting grey clouds spreading slowly across the sky. Though very modest in scale and effect, this piece employs unusual harmonies to convey the morbid feeling of depression that Liszt experienced in his old age.

Pianist: André Laplante

  • Really fascinating. Was there a precedent before this for a piece of music in the classical tradition not ending on a major or minor chord? I mean the tristan chord is an unconventional way to start a piece but there's something about ending a piece on either a chord other than a major or minor or other than the tonic that to me signifies something considerably more revolutionary than something dissonant or misleading WITHIN a piece.

  • Best version of the Nuages gris

  • @saintsaens21 For orchestration class my teacher gave us this piece to orchestrate for strings as a matter of fact.

  • it's smart to make your most progressive music technically easy...so people can play it for themselves.

  • Nice, also well played!

  • Magnifique

    Quel précurseur!!
