Gorse Is one of the ultimate 'materials' that can be used in getting your fire started; it really is one of the ultimate all time champion fire starters! JUST REMEMBER GORSE HAS PLENTY SHARP AND SHEDDING THORNS; take care of your camp or feet and backsides may get a sharp reminder to be tidy! Handle with care!...deference, gratitude, respect and appreciation!
Dried bracken is really great as a Fire Starter as is the tough Moorland grass dried, the sphagnum moss dried, dried Heather, the roots of which are said by some to be superb, (but which I have found fine, but nothing to write home about)...there's plenty on Moor and Heath to get your fire going superbly and to feed it including dried peat cut into blocks and stacked with air gaps to dry and burn and even dried herbivore dung of which there is plenty around and about!
NOTE:PLEASE CHECK SAFETY REGARDING FIRES IN PEAT AREAS and NATIONAL PARKS as well as check permissions needed. Peat areas can act similarly to CONIFEROUS FORESTS where fire can go underground and spread for miles unseen with disasterous consequences! Check for Fire Warnings! Im not saying don't have a fire, just take due care!
Now then! Back to Gorse , well it is of course far, far, FAR and away more than merely a 'material' for use in firelighting or otherwise! And certainly, I say 'material,' principally with deference to bushcraft terminology; in my own 'reality' that is my Dreaming, it is an incredible being of outstanding, awesome beauty; a real living being of the Moors with magical powers of rejuvenation, of being an extraordinary beauty, yet like the Rose, she has her thorns! She is a massive, couldn't be without part of the Moors magic, Dreaming and Life! It is certainly true that '
As a flower remedy she is highly praised, as a tea, her flowers are delicately coconutty and most delicately refreshing, as a wayside snack, the flowers are rejuvinating and strengthening, a moorland Aliantha perhaps, ( for those who understand my reference to a great modern mythology...)
Great Fire Starter too!
