The Six Rivers Trip Part 1 - The Jane and the Maxwell Rivers

Deep in the heart of Tasmania's World Heritage Listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park lies the Maxwell River. It is so remote and surrounded by such thick vegetation that only survey parties carried by helicopter regularly visit it. Next to the river is one of the most important Tasmanian Aboriginal Sites - Ballawinne Cave that was discovered in an archeologic survey in the 1980's. To kayak this remarkable river we descended two other rivers - the Erebus and the Jane, then pushed through thick scrub to reach the upper Maxwell which we followed to its meeting with the Denison River and beyond to the Gordon. We don't beleive the river has been paddled previously and we were certainly helped by a large amount of perfectly timed rain.

As you know, the botanical obstacles are hard to avoid here. Still they weren't as bad as we feared. There are other routes to the Denison, but they all involve some degree of scrub bashing.
