I love both the visual and written arts... the difference is this, however; with the visual I know immediately whether I like it or not (and why). The written art involves time. I stick to classic literature so as not to waste time reading a terrible book (unless a particular modern fiction piques my interest).

The Romantic Manifesto by Ayn Rand... a great book about art.

Hmm. God forbid kids getting out emotions and ideas through drawing.

Through all of elementary school I felt *exactly* the same way that you did about visual arts. The most I could feel was "this is pretty", I could never seem to muster the enthusiasm or appreciation that other people somehow seemed to obtain.
Reading a great piece of fiction, though, is a thousand times more rewarding to me than most visual art (unless that visual art does actually embody some abstract idea).

In philosophy class I came up with the answer, "Art is the interpretation of an idea created by the spirit which has been extracted into the oppressed human carcass."
