Hey can you please help me? I bought a 1/4 hp ao smith replacement motor to go back into my house ac unit, there are 5 wires coming from it; red, yellow, blk, (brn with white stripe) and a solid brn. the only wire that's coming from the unit to hook up to is the hot and the ground. What wires goes to what? please explain as simple as possible thank you so much.

Wait............. isn't the common rule that all common wires are white and all ground cables must be green? im confused. Can someone please tell me if i'm wrong. Thank you very much.

@chrismartin1978 Common wires aren't always white in the HVACR world. Although, in the electrician's world, white is always neutral/common.

I'm so sorry, there are 6 wires coming from the motor instead of 5 the 6th wire is blue, so all together there's blk, red, yellow, (brown with white stripe) solid brown, and blue. As I have said in the last comment please help.

@jefferybrown92 The Yellow wire is the common wire and can be hot all the time. The Black wire is the high speed wire. The Blue wire is the medium speed wire. The Red wire is the low speed wire. The Brown and the Brown/White wire goes to the run cap and they need to be the only wires to be connected to the run cap.
