Heading into the hideout, we clear the first area and grab the first few essential items.

I hate having to pare down my commentary to fit into the description area, but...meh.

Commentary:

0:30 - This plot has nothing to do with the movies, or realism at all. Oh, they also kidnapped the other six Goonies again.
0:39 - I screw around a bit because it's a nice rendition of the "Goonies R Good Enough" on 8-bit, and I want to hear the whole thing. Anyways, this is the sub-screen. There's a map, and the hideout has a "Front" and "Back" side to it, so it gets confusing sometimes. You're at the red dot. Anyways, enjoy the music for now.
1:24 - Okay, enough screwing around. When you enter a door you go into "adventure mode", which is this psuedo-3D thing (the other mode is "action mode"). You now have some options: "Go" moves you in the direction you push the D-pad in (note you can't see any doors that may be behind you). "Hit" breaks out your fist. "Take" grabs whatever item is on screen. "Tools" uses your items. Start will cancel the current command. So, there's a hammer here. The hammer can be used to hit the walls to find hidden doors or other areas.
1:36 - The Key Holder adds 2 to your max stock of keys, then fills them up. Keys are used to open safes and jail cells.
1:40 - Two things of note here. One is the safe. There is NOTHING of any use in any of the safes that are not hidden. All you do is waste a key and get a clue that you don't need. The second is the hole in the ceiling. We'll come back to it, we can't do anything with it yet.
1:46 - The Fratellis can't be killed, they can only be stunned temporarily. This one is Jake, he's got a gun, and he's the one you see most of the time. Not that big of a deal.
2:16 - The Magic Locator Device shows the location of a Goonie you need to rescue. It's on the map in blue.
2:52 - Hit the walls to find hidden items. This is a Fire Box, which increases your max stock of Fire Bombs by 5 and fills them up. Press up and attack to use them, and be careful, you can be damaged by your own incendiaries.
4:06 - Bomb Boxes have Bombs instead of Fire Bombs. They drop right at your feet, which kind of sucks, but are very strong and can open hidden doors.
4:18 - And you've saved your first Goonie, and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Mouth (how do I know? I don't. I'm guessing based upon personality and who I know he isn't). Saving Goonies, in addition to being necessary to win the game, adds one bar to your health meter, and fills it up.
4:56 - Something to pay attention to. Several doors lead between the "front" and "back" sides. When you enter from the back, Mikey is facing in the other way, but the screen is the same. The back area is always up through these areas, and the front is always down. Keep it in mind.
5:15 - The slingshot gives you a projectile weapon. You get only 40 shots, so use it wisely. Enemies can sometimes drop slingshot ammo, but of course they never do for me.
5:21 - Meet one of the useless people who shows up and gives you useless clues. They're also all over the place.
6:08 - "Warp Zones" are not nearly as cool as you'd think. All that happens is you go to a completely different part of the map. It's mostly just confusing.
6:36 - This is an interesting but ultimately useless item. It lets you get messages from other characters in the game, and sometimes from Konami themselves. I use it once to show what it does.
6:47 - This is one of those things that pisses you off if you're playing blind. What's the difference between this cranky jerk and every other useless person in this place? Well, if you hit this one, stuff happens. In fact, you need to hit him FIVE TIMES. How on earth are you supposed to figure this out, when hitting everyone else has no benefit?
7:04 - After the fifth whack, you get the Candle.
7:08 - Um...yeah, the hammer works too.
7:37 - Konamiman, Konami's mascot back in the day, refills your health. Don't hit him, or he won't do it in the future. It's even saved in the password.
7:46 - More keys are always welcome.
7:53 - And the location of the next Goonie.
8:59 - This is what is known in elite gaming circles as "going the wrong way". Oops.
9:21 - Dangerous area. The ice is slippery (you can crouch to stop sliding), and the creatures just love to knock you off of ledges.
10:06 - The Boomerang is another ranged weapon, it flies out and back, and you can throw it in any direction (but you need to jump to throw it upward). It'd be very useful if it weren't so hard to keep.
10:10 - Uh...
10:21 - Hidden safes always contain good things. The Glasses are another way of seeing hidden doors.

  • Hahaha, and all that time I thought i was just hitting the meditating guy being an pesky 9-year-old, I had no idea something actually came out of it. :) And I gasped when i saw the transciever! never seen that before!

  • @floritka85 The Transciever is very well hidden, it's the only time they hide something on a door. Luckily it's not necessary.

  • I love this game. I like the background music. Don't you have to kill the white mouse and get something?

  • @alyou You're thinking of the first Goonies game. I have a walkthrough of that as well if you are interested.

  • @UsaSatsui whats the 1st goonies game? what system?

  • @bsx121 Also made for NES, though it was not released in the US outside of the Play-Choice 10 arcade systems.
