Wendell Wilkie and Charles McNary ran against Franklin Roosevelt and Henry Wallace for president in 1940. They lost. The Republican Party made this film to show how important farming and farmers were to them. Video MaCk MCfarland www.portlandwas.com using film from The Nyback Collection www.dennisnybackfilms.com

  • Thank you for this precious clip of two great leaders.

  • He is buried in Rushville Indiana. His grave has page of his book, One World for everyone to read. He was not a conservative and would have been a great president.

  • In today's media world, Wilkie climbing over that fence while they are talking about "Hyde Park" would definitely have been seen as a shot at Roosevelt's disability. Interesting to think if that was intentional at the time.

  • Wow - McNary might be the most obscure Veep nominee ever! I'm way into this stuff and I can't say I remembered his name before seeing this clip. Thanks for the cool history. (Btw, love the shout out to New Jersey agriculture in the clip)

  • He was ahead of his times.
