So basically, because of the huge fuckoff turbo only producing it's peak airflow (around 80psi) when under throttle for at least 6 seconds, giving it time to spin up so therefore prior to that time, there isn't enough air entering the cylinders along with the diesel, causing an incomplete combustion hence the flames and 'soot' ?
The above sentence might 'gramatically fail' on many levels, but I don't care. It's 2am =\
on diesel cars with mechanical injection they have a boost compensator or anti smoke valve, this basically has a pressure sensing diaphragm or valve that only gives full fuelling when on boost.
Whack an old boiler on it and you have a lovely green hybrid!

exactly like an alco!!!

Personally, I like the smoke!

@tpvalley I see. That would explain the black smoke on initial 'throttle up'. Turbo lag = black smoke and flames, bit like an Alco.

@formidable38
they had a choke of some kind in the air lines to the governor so there is a delay;
the power handle controls air to the governor to be simplistic.
Some had that choke/restriction removed.
Its purpose was to reduce smoke when full power was needed but turbo was off boost.
