  • Where in H'burg was that? It looks like the crossing down by the Ramada Inn I stayed at back in July. Right across I81 from the Ramada...if so, what line was that? My family is from there, but I've never been there before.

  • This is the North Liberty Street crossing on the north side of downtown Harrisonburg, close to Park View and EMU.

  • That sounds like one hell of a climb through there....those engines are working like crazy! Awesome sounds!

  • @westpoint64 Same for me! You're right - the P5's don't have the whoosh sound before the main blast, when they're hooked up to an N&W style (ditherable) air valve. The Southern style air valves were electrically operated - electric switch in the cab, and a full on - full off solenoid in the air line to the horn. I think the later NS units you mentioned also have the ditherable air valves. Western Maryland used M5R24 horns, I believe....and they sounded similar.

  • @meccaturbo I thought the same thing about the P5 horn...yes, you don't hear that "whoosh" release of air just before the the trumpet chord. That P5/lack of air release sound is also noticeable on some NS SD 60s and 70s, as well. I've even heard it on some wide cabs.

I've always loved that "cast P5" sound and associated it with old high-nose Southern Railway units...Grand Trunk, Illinois Central, and Rock Island had P5 horns, as well.

  • Also, sounds like the ex N&W unit has a Southern-style Nathan P5 horn, but hooked up to the N&W air valve so it's not full on - full off like on the ex Southern units.

  • 1651 = vintage ex N&W SD40-2. Rare breed these days.

  • Ahh, listen to that beautiful horn and that bone chilling sound of that EMD! I LOVE IT!!!!

  • Sweet horn and video! I NEVER saw that kind of power leading back when I railfanned there!
