Maybe wait until danger of hard frosts and freezes is over. Keep your eyes peeled for new shoots from the base over the next year as it tries to revert back to a bush. Is yours own root like this one?

I no longer hang out with that person but some months ago it was nearly my height and I repeated the pruning again as she decided she wanted a higher crown. Over the years I've used this technique with great success on stone fruits, apples, elms, maples and more, both here and in Denver.
