Here is a clip on a kulintang player called Labaya Piang demonstrating some hand exhibitionism, mostly beater twirling, found among the Tau-sa-Ilud people of Maguindanao.

  • Be careful ! You should change the title of this video into "Kulintang performance" or "Kulintang exhibition", because in English "exhibitionism" refers to a mental disease defined as "the compulsion to display one's genitals in public" (Oxford English Dictionary). If you keep this title, you're going to attract perverts.

  • @UncleHo19 Thank you for your comment. Actually, I am fully aware of the meaning of the word and its context in the English language (-I was actually born and raised in London, in the UK). I had this issue too when I first heard my teacher use the term in such a way. However, you must be mindful that this is how 'the people and musicians' use this term. It is not our place as Ethnomusicologist when doing our fieldwork to say that the practising native musicians are wrong.

  • @UncleHo19 In addition, in a world where words are being adopted and used by those whose first language is not English, it is important as researchers to try and understand why they choose a certain word over another. Throwing caution to the wind, it is indeed very easy to fall into the traps of literal meaning within the English language, and thus the meaning of words on occasions such as this must be carefully thought out. My field of study considers people's choice of word beyond the literal.

  • It was cutoff too short at the end! Shucks! We could've seen more.

  • @rayva1 Don't worry ^_^ This clip is as long as it lasts, so there isn't much more of this clip - just the jokes and laughter on those things that went wrong in performance ;-) I do have various other interesting clips from my fieldwork, but they need to be transferred from my camcorder...this particular clip was taken with just my digital camera.

  • she should use a more descent and presentable stick. Kawawa naman

  • Could be clearer as to your definition of 'descent and presentable stick'? You sound as if you're referring to the beaters that the Maranao use that are highly decorative. This is not a Maranao kolintang demonstration. If your 'kawawa naman' comment refers to the actual music, then shame on you, for being so shallow and looking at a cosmetic factor to what was only an informal performance!
