Nigerian master drummer Ginger Johnson was a familiar figure in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s, (even appearing at the UFO club) He was one of the originators of the Notting Hill Carnival; apparently leading the first procession with his drumming. He made a handful of fine records, includng the album 'African Party' from which this track is taken. One of his students was a visiting young Fela Kuti, who it is reckoned played in the horns section on this record. In 1969 he and his drummers joined the Rolling Stones at their famous Hyde Park appearance. Ginger sadly died in the early 70s & has not received the credit he deserved for bringing so much to the musical heritage of London.

  • @tidzja Thank you. I hope Ginger Johnson's sounds will reverberate on, and get the much greater recognition he deserves, especially for this wonderful & unique album (African Party)
