Love how KIND you are with the dog. Letting him know you're not out to hurt him, as you say, setting him up to be successful. I'm a special ed aide, and severely handicapped children can be a lot like dogs -- can't understand speech, so they don't really know what you're planning to do. Positive reinforcement works for them, because that's how you can let them know what you want, and what you don't want, and that you have their welfare in mind. Thanks for the AWESOME video!

Thank you Sian, this video has been very useful. I have a scaredy dog with conjunctivitis and this method works. he will let ME put drops in his eyes. But he will still growl at the vet. You are doing such a good job with little Vinnie. How do you manage if you have to take him to the vet?

Aww Vinnie is so cute! thank you so much for posting this video! I have a shih tzu mix that's 3 months old, she just developed a prolapsed third eyelid and she is terrified of us when we try to give her the medecine that the vet gave us and does not let us touch her face at all. I'm going to try this tonight. Thanks so much again! =)

I have to thank you SOOO much Sian.
It worked, her ear is are all better and the vet is releaved too, he doesn't have to get bitten either.
Thank youu. x
Thanks so much! This is what we are doing with our dog who bites when we brush him; we're doing his training with just direct feeding of treats (we weren't quite smart enough to use a clicker!). First we treated him as SOON as he stopped biting when we were brushing him. It worked wonders -- he won't bite at all now when we brush him if we have the treats. Now we treat him if he has gone without biting for 10 or 20 seconds. What's next? Do we STOP the treats? Do we SLOW THEM DOWN?

@UkeGirl100 when it comes to grooming I like to keep the treats at hand always so I don't ever stop the treats all together as in my eyes the dog deserves a reward for being patient while you do something they don't like, for example this dog doesn't mind eye cleaning at all now and I do both his eyes in around a minute, I don't bother to reward all the time now that he is 100% cool about it so I reward after both the eyes are done. so for grooming I give a treat around every 1-5 minutes.

Bizzarre, this came just at the right time, my collie is exactly the same about his eyes being touched and has conjunctivitis so thanks for the tips. The vet said back him into a corner and get him unawares which is so creul and scarey. much prefer your way.

wow, that is really bad advice from your vet :-( I'm so happy that you have looked into better ways to train this. keep me posted on how you get on.

Incredible tutorial Sian! As always (:
5*s for the great tutorial and doing such a fantastic job with Vinnie!
If Vinnie has the problem of watery eyes, dried buttermilk sprinkled in his food will do heavens!
Take care!
