My wife and I do round pen ground work for the first time with a horse we've never worked with before. Our instructor is Brent Semingson, a John Lyons-certified trainer.

Here we're doing some of the very basics; getting a horse to move in the direction we want, turn when we want, and to face us and approach when we ask for it.

  • Whats easier training the horse or the human :-) ha ha

  • I'd say it's easier to train the horse!

  • It is similar, yes. As long as the command is consistent, you could say "salami" if you wanted your horse to stop, but "whoa" or "ho" is the sort of word you can say deeply and draw out when you want to mean business.

  • I love john lyons and all of his training techniques but what if people dont have a round pen and they are free lunging in a big arena do wejust continue to run up and down the arena after the horse........ i wish i had a round pen becuase it is so much easier to work in lol

  • We don't have a round pen where we are either, so here's how we approach free longing in an arena: if they run away from you, let them. Don't chase after them; just walk after them and get them moving as soon as you're able.

Eventually, if you keep it up, the horse may realize that it's less energy to work in smaller circles around you than it is to run around the whole arena.

Of course, we aren't trainers, and while it works for us it may not work for everyone.

  • The problem here is that you are using the same verbal cue (kissing) to drive her forward and when you are calling her in. You can she that this confuses her. You also don't really have her attention as she seems to be real focused on sniffing the ground. You want to keep her engaged.

  • Good points, certainly. As stated by the video's title, this was the first time we did ground work, and that was over two years ago. We've come a long way since then, and are now the owners of two horses--not the mare pictured here--who are boarded at a different facility as this.

  • This guy Brent Semingson is basically doing Monty Robert's"Join Up" technique wrong, and giving wrong advice. One important point is that you need to turn AWAY from the horse and invite them in after driving them, not face them and not look at them. This guy needs a refresher course in these techniques before he attempts to coach anyone else.

  • I have a horse that wont come to anyone, wont let us catch her, so we cant work with her or do anything with her.

  • Wow. I just adopted a rescue horse and i have no training experience. just trying to watch some videos and soak up information. This will prolly be ME this weekend!

  • awesome :D

  • I don't hav a horse, but yesterday I watched a nieghbor work his horses and he used a long pole that he tapped the ground w/ and when he wanted them to stop, he just siad "ho". Is that sort of the same thing...his horses aren't professionaly trained but...?
