HP6910P running vista SP1 Business. Screensaver kicks in and turns screen blank. Machine recovers normally but not this time ! Hard disk makes clicking noise.. can't get out of it's standby loop.
Laptop was on AC and powersetting was set to *only* blank the screen, leave the machine alone for all the other options ( so no standby after xx hours).

after forced reboot, the eventlog spawned the following error

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000ea (0x83c80020, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP.

bugcheck? it's just a screenblank guys.

Update: HP support says that the "clicking" is actually the CD-Rom drive, not the HD

  • well the sound is too loud and too much of a "thump" to be the harddrive i think. Did you upgraded to the latest BIOS? they fix all sorts of shit

  • We did. I've heard later from an HP engineer that they believe it's the DVD rom drive (re) initialising constantly..

    hmmmm
