When parishioners of Ascension parish on the Upper West Side of Manhattan pressed Father John Duffell for an evening Sunday Mass, he challenged them to find a format that worked. The result was a unique liturgy using jazz music.

  • Forget all the "labels' 'catagories'.. what is this, what is that.. thats PURE EGO.. if God is great, and God is love, then he, she. or it wont be bothered by human mental categories of what is and what isn't.. GET INTO the music and transcend the petty stuff..

The Catholic church thought JAZZ was the devll's music for a long time.. and oh yeah, the Earth was flat HAHA!

  • And people wonder why nobody wants to go to church or become a priest or nun?

  • I attend that parish... Fr. Duffel is good, but keeps saying "sexual orientation" like a broken record... in a church which would never, ever allow that sort of behavior to be sanctified in marriage... I like the normal masses better, but often find that I can only make the 6:30 ones...

  • I think that this is a great step forward. Most music used in Catholic Church settings is based on European Classical, which is great. But, only 10% of the American public listen to classical. Jazz is more popular and contemporary. I play the bass and bass/guitar. At present, I play in three bands. Also, I am a semi-retired RC Franciscan-Capuchin priest. It has been my hope that at some time in the future an opportunity participate in the development of a jazz idiom for the liturgy!

  • I'm astounded great job and sorry for those who say that it ain't catholic what is catholic? is it just bells and smells and people chanting latin? I mean i am a theology graduate and had to go through latin hours for 2 semesters no kidding! Hell in an hour! joking but seriosly, such translations of certain liturgical moments into modern language (such as jazz) help the congregation if you call that protestant well, tell me where the protestars are and i'll go :)

  • this is not Catholic! It's another Protestant concept.

  • does the priest wear a blue suit jacket with sequin lapels to say mass?

can I smoke in that bar um, i mean church?

  • There is nothing at all Catholic about this profane (not to mention lame) music being thrust into the Mass. It is an abomination.

  • Great effort! Wonderful use of your gifts for prayer and for the people. :) Best wishes from Malaysia - audrey

  • That was great. Love the concept and the video/photography!! Well done.
