A Civic Education Experience for Karamoja's Top Students - The tour was sponsored by the U.S. Army Civil Affairs Team and USAID in partnership with GIZ, World Food Program, Save the Children, Community Based Organization, Oxfam, World Vision and Cornelius Kodet. While in Kampala, the students visited the Uganda Parliament, Makerere University (the main University in Uganda), UPDF Headquarters, National Museum, Entebbe Zoo, Kampala hydroelectric plant and also held a meeting with their representative in Parliament.
Background to the Trip: The youth in the Karamoja region are caught in a cycle of violence and poverty. This cycle centers on pastoralism, cattle rustling and lack of opportunity. Young people (high school students) do not know their own government, country, and other livelihood options. The majority of the youth do not graduate from high school and never leave Karamoja region, continuing the cycle of violence and isolation this region is known for. This trip sought to offer the youth exposure and open them up to the world and opportunities it has to offer. Each government secondary school in the region provided their top two students, based on academic performance, to take part in the civic education trip.
