Arab-Israeli Clashes in Acre

The northern Israeli city of Acre is considered to be a peaceful area. But clashes between Arabs and Israelis began when an Arab man drove into a Jewish district at the start of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. And therefore disturbing the start of a 24 hour fast and abstention from driving.

STORY:
Israeli riot police patrolling the city of Acre are trying to restore the peace.

For four nights Arab and Israeli youths have been rioting, damaging cars and properties.

The trouble began when an Arab man drove into a Jewish area of the city at the start of Yom Kippur.

Word spread that Jewish youths were stoning the vehicle, and young Arabs responded violently.

Officials say there are no serious injuries, but at least 11 Arab homes have been torched.

Relations between Arabs and Israelis in Israel has at times been very tense.

This resident says that a small group of people are to blame for the violence.

[Yuval Haviv, Acre Resident]:
"There has always been co-existence in Acre, there has always been co-operation with the Arabs. There has never been an atmosphere like the one created in the last few days. But I think it will all work out, it's just the anger of a few very extreme people."

Police have arrested at least 22 people during the clashes in a city often seen as a bastion of peace.

Israel's prime minister-designate, Tzipi Livni visited the area urging for calm from both communities.
