  • please tell me where are you fishing...pacific? and what are you using for bait on you fly rod?

  • santa monica beach, ca - we're using #6 sized weighted surf worm patterns or shrimp / crab patterns. the surf perch will hit most any fly pattern in red/orange/brown that will fit in their mouth.

  • nice

  • surfperch fishing is the best in winter as they spawn.

  • nice catch

  • Most important thing to know. The surf is often very dangerous. Even shallow surf, if it is strong enough, can kill you.

  • (continued) What time of the year? Believe or not, I have caught them in the dead of winter, in the spring, the summer and fall. If you are after them in the winter, try a plastic grub (motor oiled color) on a number six sized hook. 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce sinker (depending on the power of the surf). Sinker can be a fixed (held in place on the line) with a Carolina Keeper, 18 inches, or so, above the hook. Any tackle owner worth his salt will know what a Carolina Keeper is. Line 4 lb test.

  • (continued) In the beginning, they are a lot fun to catch. But that fun will eventually turn to boredom, and you will then want to go looking for larger game in the surf to maintain you adrenalin fix. Game such as corbina, shark, or halibut. However, when your are just starting out the perch is a good way to get your feet wet (pun intended). You find them practically anywhere there is surf in Southern California. They are like bluegill on steroids.

  • Not to brag (well may be just a little) I have caught barred surf perch with sand crabs, blood worms, earth worms, mussels, black colored plastic grubs, pearl colored plastic grubs, motor oiled colored plastic grubs and fresh water crappy lures (which are not supposed to work). The trick is finding which way their school is moving, to the right, or to the left; then follow the school. They are always moving somewhere and always in very shallow surf. (continued on next post)

  • man it looks like fun these surf perch make me think of sunfish! i live on the east coast so we have porgies and they are a blast to catch 5 pts in my book!

  • Looks like fun!

  • hehe, nice trick
