Re-Phased XS 650 Engine. Bored to 707CC, Ported and Polished head, Custom intakes, Port Matched Carbs and Intakes, Dual Lectron Flatslide carbs 34MM, Custom Pamcopete Ignition (all electric baby!!!) 277 Degrees of Re-Phase, all done by myself. Just got it running in this video, needs tuning and timing, a bit rich still, but seems to run fine otherwise.

  • Excuse me if I'm wrong, but rephasing alone does nothing for improved horsepower or torque and only changes the sound and makes it shake more correct?

If your rephase also changes something else, you should let people know. If you're boring out the heads and using bigger pistons, or changing the valves or stroke or timing or compression please say so... I like the sound, and I see the point in that, but unless it includes other mods to make it perform it wouldn't be worth the bother to me.

  • @oregonmeds

Do some research on the rephasing, it definitely gives more than a "sound" change. Torque and throttle response are greatly improved, without modding any other internals. I have several customers using bone stock internals and just the rephased crank and cam, and those bikes run much stronger than a stock configuration. There are some great Tech writeups on the xs650 . com site and others... Take a look around, you'll see the difference

  • What gains do you get from re-phasing, i figure there would be less vibration due to having one piston on exhaust stroke other on intake , where do u get a cam to work with this crank i dunno man this seems like alot of serious machining

  • @TwinCamSam88

I know this guy, he can do all the hard work for you - Hugh's HandBuilt

The gains are impressive, feel free to do a google search and find my blog and you can read more about it there. Youtube won't let me do a direct link of course.

If by the stock rotation's soul you mean "Little old lady watching 'Matlock' while knitting a sweater for the neighbor's dog" then the Re-Phase's soul would be "21 Year old Hottie who drives a Hot Rod Cadillac, serving the finest Micro-Brews at your local watering hole and then going to your place after work " then I'm ok with that... :)

  • you can tell that the rephase smooths out the engine, simply by the fact that the bike isn't walking itself across the parking lot on the kickstand like every stock xs does.

  • @oregonmeds it is basically Big Bang Theory and all recent race bikes are rephased to try and catch the Ducatis (Google it)

  • Nice, but back in the seventies when I rode an XS650, I knew at least two girls that really appreciated the vibration of my bike. Especially while idling at stop lights. ;-)

  • how does the rephase affect the "XS BUZZ"? does it make it better/worse?

  • Whatever the people are saying, i really like the sound and it sounds like you know what you are doing! Cant wait to see the finished product! Sweet bike, nice job!

  • @po18guy Yamaha re-phased the TDM850 to make it the TRX850. They also did this with the Super Tenere 1200. In a stock XS, both pistons stop simultaneously at the top of the stroke and again at the bottom of the stroke. The crank thus has to accelerate both pistons from a stop twice per rev. In a re-phase, only a single piston stops at a time, while the other is still moving - its momentum assisting the stopped piston to accelerate. This benefits both power and reduces vibration.

  • @oregonmeds What re-phasing does is give you near-perfect primary balance in an engine design that is notorious for shake. It reduces vibration. The sound then becomes that of an 83º twin, and thus, very similar to 90º twins, such as Ducati, Honda RC51, Suzuki SV1000, etc.

  • Hey nice, and the best part is that it no longer needs a gas tank. Can you do this to my old Suburban?

  • Nice!! Too bad this was done to a bobber and not a cafe bike though :-P

  • I could sit and watch points all day....
