3rd of 3 videos about Gdynia Trolleybuses (in Poland). We start with a study of three different trolleybuses in the Town Centre - a Jelcz of the later design, a new Solaris Trollino and then an earlier Jelcz. The Jelcz trolleybuses are a copy of the Berliet designs from France.
The scene then moves to an out-of-town busy cross roads, and then onto a special trip.
Starting with a driver's-eye view, this trip used ex-St Gallen (Switzerland) Saurer Trolleybus number 3300. This is used by the Gdynia operator every Sunday to run trips from the town to the nearby resort of Sopot. It can also be hired for special occasions, which is what our party did. It ends up at the terminus of route 28.
The Gdynia video series starts at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTz4FXS7-SA

  • I'm curious why did you show the oldest and the most ugly one? The movie is from this year. In Gdynia there are a lot of luxury and cool trolleybuses :P for example solaris. Also it's full of modern motorbuses like man, solaris, mercedes benZ ;)

As I know trolleybuses became more popular at these area when Germans were occupied Gdynia.

  • If you view 'Gdynia Trolleybuses - 1' it starts with a selection of the more recent vehicles, including Solaris. When I got to the 3rd video, I added the historic trolleybus that Gdynia operates. It is actually from Switzerland and is interesting because it is different. I don't film motorbuses because they are not environmentally friendly, or interesting to me for that matter.

  • LMB22, I believe that if you return to Gdynia nowadays you will be pleasantly surprised. As T4400 mentioned, the urban center has been given a facelift and the interwar architecture (and trolleybuses!) are shown to great advantage. Tbusuk, thank you for showing this. I must confess I was completely unaware of the existence of the trolleybus before visiting Gdynia and ever since I have been intrigued by these vehicles. Where else can one find trolleybuses?

  • In Poland Tychy and Lublin have trolleybuses also. There are about 350 systems worldwide - too many to list! In Europe the bigger ones are Athens, Bucharest, Naples, Lyon, Geneva (and lots more in Swizerland), Salzburg...... Further east there are Kiev, Tallin, Riga etc. Have a look at worldwide dot trolleybus dot org dot uk for some examples.

  • Some of the footage seems to be quite old as the part of Swietojanska street shown in the beginning has been rebuilt a while ago.

  • It was taken in October 2004. We saw the first of the Mercedes O405N motorbuses being converted in the workshops, so unfortunately didn't see any running. They had several Solaris trolleybuses in service, and have since bought some more, I believe.
