BBC1 Tomorrow's World 1990 - The car that parks itself

From 8.26pm on Thursday 31st May 1990, Peter McCann shows us the new automobile (a VW Futura) that parks itself using infra-red lasers. Well, eventually parks itself after having one false start requiring driving away from the parking spot and then driving up to it again, followed by a couple of minutes of crab like manoevers delicately getting into the space*.

* Not to be used on a UK high street unless you really want to be lynched by the impatient lunatic road-rage filled motorists that you are holding up. Also, I am not sure if leaping out of it before it started parking was just so the cameras got a better look at the interior, I think they always did this in case it hurtled off at 90mph and drove into a shop window.

AS Peter McCann mentions the car makes a sound if you're getting too close to something, nowadays there are cars that make warning sounds like that especially when you're parking as I have a BMW car that does it.
