SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18 -- The first 60 minutes after the onset of ischemic stroke symptoms can mean the difference between patients receiving thrombolytic therapy or not receiving it, researchers said here.
Although the window for treatment with tissue plasminiogen activator (tPA) is three hours, the reality is that patients who arrive at the hospital before that first "golden hour" ends are more likely to receive thrombolytic therapy than those who arrive more than an hour after symptom onset, Jeffrey L. Saver, M.D., of the University of California Los Angeles Stroke Center, reported at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference.
