On August 9th, 1988, the NHL was forever changed with the single stroke of a pen. The Edmonton Oilers, fresh off their 4th Stanley Cup title in 5 years, signed a deal exporting Wayne Gretzky, Canadian national treasure and the greatest hockey player ever, to the Los Angeles Kings. In the ESPN Films "30 for 30" documentary "Kings Ransom," "Friday Night Lights" creator and director Peter Berg presents the captivating story of the trade that knocked the wind out of an entire country and placed a star-studded city right at the humble feet of the Great One."

  • Hey it's David Copperfield @ 0:35

  • "The last shirt I'll ever buy of the Oilers again!"

Until 2 years later when the Oilers would win the cup for a 5th time and without Gretzky. I'm sure he jumped back on that bandwagon, LOL!!

  • @WuTangShogun36 two different sports!

  • this seems like to me gretzky is to canada like lebron is to cleveland

  • Don't compare Gretzky to Lebron. Gretzky is the best. Lebron is not even close to being as good as Gretzky in basketball. Lebron left. Gretzky didn't.

  • Woow we looked soooo funny back then

  • @shallehalle Sadly the cavs didn't have the team to help Lebron like the Oilers had around Gretzky, so without that and the 4 championships before he left, Lebron ain't ever gonna be mentioned in the same breath as Gretzky.

I suppose it would be the reverse for Lebron (it would seem), getting traded from a bad team to a stacked team, tho we'll see whether he wins or not in the future!

  • These Canadians are quite violent. Cleveland took LeBron's move better than this.

  • Not gonna lie, I really feel bad for Janet!

  • Actually Pocklington (according to the book "Gretzky's Tears") tried to at least keep Gretzky in Canada by trying to work out a trade with the Vancouver but bottom line was (i think) Peter wanted that 15 Million (american) that Bruce McNall offered i really don't think he cared what player he got in return because at the time(88) only Mario Lemieux or possibly Steve Yzerman was close close to being equal to Gretzky ...the players and coach wanted more cups Peter just wanted to get out of debt.
