It wasn't even the spirit of anarchy that first lead him to smash guitars. It was he was swinging it around for the different sounds and accidentally put it through the ceiling of the club and broke the head off his guitar. He didn't know what he should do about it and decided to smash the rest of it. He admits it was an auto-destructive art thing, not a rebellion thing. Eventually it became so much a part of the show people would riot if he didn't smash the guitar.

While smashing a guitar is undoubtedly very cool, and about as rocknroll as it gets, and while I accept that this is the one and only Mr Pete Townshend, there's a pretty big part of me that thinks "Pete ... this was great when you were young and beautiful and burning with an intense anger at the ills of an unjust society and all the rest of it, but now you just look like an old man having a hissy fit because his bus pass has been held up in the post or something." I'm glad he's stopped.
