They were willing to serve in the US Navy - that much was obvious - but this one fact of loading the ammunition as fast as possible to line an officer's pocket was the one thing they were refusing to do.

in WW2 there were over 465,000 men kia. lmost every man who served in that war faced danger often. I feel sorry for the men of port chicago, but they were stateside. What about all the men in the shit i'm sure they didnt want to get killed.
These guys refused to follow orders during wartime. Many were sent on dangerous missions, Bomber crews in europe, beach invasions. Sailors can't say they don't want to complete a mission because it's too dangerous. No question they needed to serve time in the brig.
