This Green Woodpecker is uncommman and not a regular visitor but I have seen many times in my garden..This is the first time that I was able to capture to my camara..
A large Woodpecker 32cm(12in) with green and yellow plumage and a bright red crown.Male has red moustache and black edging.Woodpeckers are highly specialised for file in the trees and for extracting insects from crevices with their long tongues with barbed tips. The green Woody can strech its tongue out 10cm (4 in) beyond the tips of its beak.Using its tongue,it can probe deep in to the galleries of an ants nests...(in my video you can see exactly he is doing the same)
In a garden with Ants and Ants hills,or in old grassland, green woddy find rich pickings, often making a Blackbird a tidy gardener....But its beauty compensates for any damage caused....
RELATRD SPECIES - GREATED SPOTTED , LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER
