The decision was taken ( mid 1950s) when Britain was possessed with a mania to throw out everything old and / or traditional - instantly.

@RocksNotDead101 well its all about economy now. you could hook up multiple diesels or electrics to achieve the horsepower needed, and they'd all be driven by one driver. also, they required less labor and manpower to operate.obviously, some steam engines could easily outperform a diesel, but thats the side the dice rolled on. i'm against it, but if its whats needed to actually keep railroads active and fully functional, then i'm all for it

Am I the only person who cannot comprehend how they originally planned to destroy all traces of steam engines? They are the most amazing pieces of machinery ever! So beautiful as well!
