Newsreel showing the introduction of the Douglas DC-6. Almost comical the way they show the luxuries of air travel compared to today.

  • I flew the DC-6 as a Second Officer in the Royal Air Force Transport Command in 1953. We had six aircraft which had been seconded to the RAF from the USAF. These aircraft had been used in the earlier Berlin Airlift. The DC-6 had excellent flight characteristics, and was a very responsive aircraft to fly.

In later years I flew its smaller, twin engined cousin, the DC-3/C-47 (Dakota) in Kenya East Africa.

  • Now you're packed in like on a transit bus, tossed a bag of peanuts and a cup of cola . At least I am old enough to remember the jet age when a real hot meal was served on a domestic flight and flying was indeed a pleasurable experience. The only thing that they can't take away from the majesty of air travel is the views from above. At least that's still free in a way.

  • overhead bins used to be sleeping berths. LOL

  • @itsmegp46 Yes. Flying time... ...and safety.

  • The only saving grace of today's jets vs. those old propeller planes is flying time. From the DC-6 to the DC-8 introduced roughly 1959-60, flying time was cut in half.

  • I remember flying when the Airlines actually wanted you as a passenger and didn't get to leech off taxpayer money like they do now. Why anyone would fly commercial except at the most dire need now is beyond me it is a degrading, horrible experience that people actually pay for! Since most of the airlines make their money on freight they will never give a rip about passenger comfort again. In this day of instant video conferencing I am surprised at the number of folks that still fly.

  • Beats the hell out of the airlines of today.

  • DC-4, DC-6 and DC-7 are awesome and epic planes!!!

  • I would of loved to live in those days! All the cool planes!

  • Flight attendants wearing high heel shoes. Who dreamed up that torture?

  • I learned to fly there......1970
