THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WILL NEVER TELL YOU THIS, but the real reason we're in Afghanistan (and why we installed a Unocal employee as its president) is the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, which will be constructed from 2010 through 2015 and beyond (while U.S. troops protect it from sabotage). It will start at the Caspian Basin, cover over 1000 miles of rough terrain (crossing 3 countries), and end at an export terminal to be built in Pakistan on the coast of the Arabian Sea. Nifty idea, eh? The only problem is the Pashtuns and Taliban don't want it. Bush declared the Taliban were terrorists and chased them out of Afghanistan after we'd interfered with a deal they'd signed with a company from Argentina to build that same pipeline.
So guess who has to be chased out again, only this time from Pakistan? (More fun and games from the same people who brought you the Iraq war!) Iran proposed its pipeline at the same time Unocal approached congress with the idea back in '98. Fortunately for them, their line won't have to cross any dangerous territories. Does this mean we went into Afghanistan and caused all that trouble for nothing? Hmmm! Maybe it's time for us to re-think whether or not we want our troops to risk their lives for a really BAD idea.
