Gitmo Upgrade: US to spend $40 million on renovation

Despite promises to close Guantanamo Bay, Washington is now preparing to invest tens of millions into renovating the controversial facility's infrastructure. ­The Pentagon is planning to install a $40-million fiber optic cable at Guantanamo, and the base's commanders say such a long term investment in infrastructure makes sense only if the US intends to continue operating the base.

U.S. lawyer and attorney, Eric Montalvo, who's represented some of the detainees at Guantanamo, believes the American leadership is totally failing to practice what it preaches.

What happened to the articulate, peace loving, sensible, rational president the American people elllected on a very public platfrom that the US will close Guantanamo and pull its troops out of Afganistan? Maybe they have not all been told Bin Laden is dead?

The US naval base at Guantanamo Bay predates the current Cuban government (and the US travel ban) by more than half a century. The base serves many more purposes than just the detention facility. Interestingly, the US State Department pays Cuba for the lease...it's a nominal fee of about $1,500 per year, paid by check, which Castro regularly puts into his desk drawer and refuses to cash.
