Today's guest: Maki

Stick News: no car day in China

I thought Maki said some very interesting things in the interview.
Such as what she said about the difficulty of learning a language when you are surrounded by your native language at your workplace. I also faced this problem when trying to learn Japanese in Japan.
Also, as she did, I learnt a lot about the country I come from by going overseas.

Note for people who don't understand Japanese:
Maki used the word "gaijin" 外人. This means foreigner, but, as it says in wikipedia it is "mainly used to refer to non-East Asians". There are 4 kinds of people in Japan: Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and foreigners.

  • What are Kiwi friends?

What was that her friend pointed out to her why shopping? I assume it was an ethnicity or reference to something like it but I don't know what the word was.

  • Kiwi means New Zealander, so friends from New Zealand. As for your second question, I meant to put that in the video description actually. Her friend said "gaijin". Gaijin means foreigner and it's not unusual for people in Japan to say "(gasp) gaijin da" when they see a non-asian person. Understandable I guess, because non-asians stand out in Japan ... but it doesn't make you feel good if you happen to be one of those people.

  • Good job in Niseko. Take care for a trip to Canada! You are lucky!!

  • Thank you : )

  • Oh, an asian that is not too racist to have kiwi friends... is this for real?

  • She was supposed to be taught what was happened in WW2 in high school in Japan. However, I agree that staying in abroad let us know and recognize about our own country more than just staying in the country where we were born, because we can compare the differences,

  • you sound odd, why would you teach english like that? there is some inaccurate information. for example i watched an episode about the kings of myspace and you used wikipedia as a source of information, when in fact it is not an accurate source because anybody can edit it

  • I like the word kiwifriends,it sounds so funny,lol

  • i liked this episode!

english is my first language, but i dont know why i'm so addicted!

  • This was absolutely great. I really like your show because it's a learning experience for everyone. Thank you. Can't wait to see you in Canada.

  • Have fun in Canada. Be sure to try some of their Canadian bacon (you know, what normal people call "ham"!)

  • 寿司は確かにおいしいです!

It is heard that nature in New Zealand is very beautiful. I want to go and to see.
