@irelephant Who ever he learned from he stil made his own style and sound of finger picking and it is second to none....Jorma is a picking god.....David is also a great player you can never compare guys like this.They r so different. in styles david can do anything on the acoustic..But Jorma right hand is Magic....These guys r great together.
Both players have synthesized the styles of several players and come out with very different styles. Bromberg's American blues style with the bent strings is unique and immediately identifiable.
Have to disagree, nowhere in Jorma's bio does it say that he did not receive lessons from the Rev. and to back that he did... "Davis became a teacher during this period, and his students included some very prominent White guitar players, including David Bromberg and the Jefferson Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen" ...quoted from The Reverend Gary Davis by Bruce Eder, All-Music Guide
That's actually only true about Bromberg. The Bio on Jorma's website bears me out. Both do covers of Rev. Gary Davis, of course and play is a similar style.

actually David Brromberg did study guitar under the Rev Gary Davis, Jorma was taught fingerstyle guitar by Ian Buchanan .
