In northern US city of Detroit, homeless shelters are seeing new faces - individuals and families who need a hot meal or roof over their heads for the first time.

Al Jazeera's Casey Kauffman met a mother and a daughter trying to get on with their lives, despite losing a job and their home.

@cdltpx BEST THING IS WE PAID ALL OUR BILLS WE DIDNT GO TO DISNEYLAND WE HAD NO VACATION WE WORKED FOR YEARS. Why because I have been homeless I HAVE BEEN HOMELESS guess what I learned DONT BE HOMELESS do all that you can to insure you are not exposed in that manner ever EVER AGAIN. If you are homeless the police are your enemy they are filled with hate it is why they are police because they like to cause trouble for other people they want to be a bully they love that they can be mean and get $.

@cdltpx You can get ahead here in the USA but you have to be smart enough to buy the least expensive place you can so you can pay it off sooner don't listen to the realator they are there to make money not look for your better interest.You don't own anything if you OWE anyone. Our home cost $32K+10K in repairs after a hurricane. Houses in the area cost $120K so our home is no where as attractive but everything works we have Washer dryer climate control it is clean no roaches micerats comfortable

Being homeless sucks and when I was young I had to deal with the economy of REGAN they really didn't give a damm about anyone.I graduated HS and fast food were the only work guess what I worked fast food all my life if there was a job I became it I have always worked but didn't always have a home.I learned and when I finally got my name on a home I paid it off in 8 years some thought I should get a better home I felt I better pay what I have off now and be thankful for what I have.

One day many years ago I opened my eyes & I found myself in this strange new world. I do my best to live here. But it is not always a very nice place. :(
