Greater scaups flock in Cranberry Cove on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens in Mississauga Ontario Canada.
The flock had been swimming to the west of here, backlit by the sun and therefore hard to photograph. As I was leaving, pictureless, I heard the sound of beating wings. I retraced my steps to find the flock moving east into much more flattering light.
They were still a few hundred meters off shore, and I was standing on a slippery slope, but I think you will appreciate how the flock moves in a leapfrog style.
The South Peel Naturalists' Club (http://www.spnc.ca/Index.html) conducts an Christmas Bird Count each year at this time. In 2009, the count takes place Saturday, December 19. Last year, thousands of Greater Scaup flew in to be counted.
