The Nyonya Kebaya of today is an enchanting, translucent, figure-hugging embroidered blouse worn with a pakalongan batik sarong by Peranakan ladies (Nyonya).
It is this and much more. A nyonya kebaya is a work of art, a labour of love, a heritage, a traditional costume, a political statement, that is timeless. An attire for all occasions, it is beautiful, elegant, feminine, alluring, sensual, sexy, glamorous, comfortable, cooling and fashionable for all ages.
However, an authentic Nyonya Kebaya tends to come with a price tag that is not within the budget of many people today,
like the Japanese Kimono, it has become a luxury garment, unlike the Kimono, it's made to suit the tropical heat.
Most of the pictures are from the book Nyonya Kebaya, the collection of DATIN SERI ENDON MAHMOOD.

  • The kebaya sulam with its elaborate embroidery used to take six

months to make by hand in the past. The kebaya is worn with a batik sarung.

Nyonyas preferred Pekalungan batik from Java because of its vibrant

combination of colours, and motifs of flowers, birds, insects, and other animals

    (Pepin Van Roojen Productions 1993).

  • By the end of the 1920s, young Nyonyas abandoned the old-fashioned

austere baju panjang for the more modern nyonya kebaya. The word kebaya is

derived from the Portuguese word kobaya. The short kebaya was more flattering,

as it was figure-hugging and shapely, with intricate embroidery at the neckline,

sleeves and hem. The use of lace on kebayas may have been an influence from

Portuguese and Dutch women who wore blouses with lace trimmings during

    colonial times.

  • The traditional Nyonya costume was the Baju Panjang which can be traced to

Javanese origins. It consisted of a long loose calf-length top with long sleeves

worn over a batik sarong. The collar is Chinese and the dress is fastened by a

set of kerosang (brooches). They were initially made of cotton but by 1910,

French and Swiss voile and organdie became the fashion.

Sdangkan mrka ngak ada ptalian or sejarah ama negara indonesia.. Bg gue Kebaya bkn bju tradisi org indon tp bju tradisi BANGSA MELAYU.. Ngerti!!

  • Kenapa kebaya nyonya a.k.a kebaya encim (indon) saja yg dikomersialkn, di Malaysia ada byk jenis kebaya yg xdtonjolkn lg.. Cntoh di penang ada kebaya mami (anak mami), kebayanya lebih unik, byk labuci, sampai skrg etnis india muslim baik kaum mami or mamak maseh pakai bju kebaya.. Yg aku kagum merka mgenakan kebaya setiap waktu, xmcm org melayu kita time raye je pakai.. X kan nk biar kebaya mami ni pupus kot?..

  • Kebaya is malay no matter one. They're the immigrants. Kebaya is from indonesia.
