The highest mountain in the northeast is Mt. Washington in NH, at 6288 feet. Horses climbed its Auto Road during this special Horse Event weekend. About 30 horseback riders and 4 carriages went to the summit. There were water stops every mile, and horses were monitored at each checkpoint under a veterinarian's supervision.

The weather was perfect, the horses were fit and in good condition for this type of work. These horses are Arabian-Percheron cross full brothers (half draft horse) who were bred as carriage horses. They were trained and conditioned on hills for 2 months prior to this event. They are barefoot and wore rubber hoof boots on all four feet.

The road up Mt. Washington was built for horses and carriages 150 years ago. In the late 1800s, 6-horse wagons pulled 12 people up the Carriage Road daily. For the last 100 years it has been an Auto Road used by cars.

  • What a beautiful video, I have been up Mt. Washington many times but going by horse and wagon is the best.

    Thanks for the ride.

    Bill

  • @old64goat Glad you enjoyed the virtual carriage drive-- it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

  • That is so cool...and so beautiful! I am even more convinced that I need to move to NH.

  • @EchoHarmonic It IS beautiful in NH-- but not exactly horse friendly in the wintertime! Our boys do nothing all winter but paw around in the snow looking for something organic to chew on. Tree bark is one of their favorites.

  • @horsepaintings Haha :)

  • @HorseLuvaWWELuva Likely that we passed her on the Road-- the riders were coming down as the carriages were going up. There were 5 carriages, 4 of which made the summit. The Auto Road media director told me that the horses were all "champions!" I agree!!!

  • @horsepaintings Yes she was. But she didn't drive she rode with somone else... When she got back she told me that she was 1 out of 27 horses to reach the summit in 100 years!!!

  • @HorseLuvaWWELuva Was she riding in this horse event too? This was the first time in about 100 years that horses have been on the Auto Road!

  • My riding instructor reached the summit this year!! And it was her first time!!
