This is a discussion put on by Skidmore College's Hip Hop Alliance club. It is part 3 of Hip Hop Alliance's Discussion Series. The three part series aims to challenge and engage students, faculty, and staff on the subjects of racism, sexism, and homophobia in Hip Hop and America.

NAACP buried the word.
"Kramer" and "Dog the Bounty Hunter" said it.
Rapper NaS used it to name his next album.
Is it wrong to say it? Who can say it?

They should talk about Racism as it is today

I think people focus on the word Nigger too much

Nigger is |& was a word that white supremacists say to put black people down

Some black people use it, but I wud say MOST dont

I think its more important to tackle the fact that whiteness is still seen as superior to blackness in western society

@Applebaum I won't say about most Black people not saying it. It depends on where and how you grew up. To one, it can seem like everyone does say it. The word itself doesn't have a solid origin. Check out the book called "The N-Word" and my thesis called "The Semi-Banned Music" which has a section on the word.

here is what i think, let black people say it to each other, let them sing it and let them use it whenever they want. It is a derogatory term and it shows complete ignorance. If they want to keep proving that black people are lesser then everyone other race out there, then so be it. You don't see Jews calling each other their names and you don't see Mexicans doing it either etc...etc... Black people just keep proving they are a burden on society.
