With only three weeks until competition start, MovieTime (http://www.movietime.co.nz) owner Layla Robinson decided to put a team together for New Zealands biggest short film competition, 48HOURS Furious Filmmaking (http://www.48hours.co.nz).
Contacting customers, friends, friends of friends, and through advertising, Layla, who had never made a short before, put together a fantastic team of 97% short film virgins and started pre-production.
When competition start rolled around, Layla and her team of writers including published author Lyn Rasmussen (http://www.lynrasmussen.com), converged at the Ngongotaha Trout Hatchery to piece together the concept and screenplay for their film. The genre was to be 'Nature Run Amok' and their random elements were; Item: A Rock, Character: Alex Puddle and Line of Dialogue: "It doesn't fit".
Heading in a more subtle direction than they thought their competitors would, MovieTime Productions opted for a drama with only two main characters.
Shot at Hell's Gate on the outskirts of Rotorua, New Zealand's #1 geothermal location on Mother's Day 2009, 'Out of the Storm' is a great effort for first timers with wonderful imagery thanks to Capture Productions (http://www.captureproductions.co.nz/) and a fantastic soundtrack by Rotorua band, Harvest (http://www.bebo.com/harvestband101).
Looking back now, Layla and her team certainly see basic film making aspects they need to improve on for next year's entry, and she figures she will opt for more obvious uses of the random elements to follow suit of some of the winning entries.
MovieTime Productions certainly welcome your feedback :-)
