Sorry, I meant 1790, the year Cosi premiered in Vienna--not 1789. But you get the idea--Da Ponte and Mozart wanted to stick it to Mesmerism (and give the audience a good laugh at the same time).
And a big thank you to elias12186 for uploading this wondeful production! It's fantastic.

@entropyftw This scene is Da Ponte's (and Mozart's) way of ridiculing Mesmerism--a dubious, purported "medical" treatment involving magnets that had been very popular some years earlier, before it was deemed to be a sham and fell into disfavor. It was a controversial, hotly-debated topic of the time; the 1789 Viennese audience would have understood the reference right away.

@thesir27 Yes, Mozart indicated he wanted this sung "pel naso"--nasally, in other words. Back then composers worked closely with the singers and crafted the music to suit the singers' strengths and proclivities. Despina was created for the young Dorotea Bussani, the first Cherubino--so Mozart was well acquainted with her voice and buffa abilities and knew she could pull off singing comically. In real life she was married to the much older bass Francesco Bussani who sang the first Don Alfonso.
