@johnsammyanfal Excellent observation! After he won his Oscar he seemed hell bent on ruining his career by making bad movies including Waterloo. By the early 70s he was finished. Brando's technique was never more visible than in his final scene in The Score when he's begging De Niro to save his ass. His stumbling, broken speech and attempts to be 'spontaneous' were painfully obvious.
Gee, he's crying! Brando talked about how Steiger liked to cry and how they did 7 takes of the taxi scene because of it. As far as using yourself to play the character, Spencer Tracy did that in the 30s. When he talks about performing, he reminds me of Jerry Lewis who admitted that when he opens the fridge and the light comes on, he did a show!
Rod's quite scary the way he shout-talks. Although I found his insights on acting to be very interesting and articulate, I much prefer Olivier's less high-flown or egotistic view of it being something mainly technical - a craft, rather than an art.
And I pretty much second what johnsammyanfal said. Rod gave some great performances, though others of his were marred by overacting or too much intensity. Still, bless him for owning up that he was a bit of a ham.
Highwaters.

Steiger was a terrific actor but a little uh, weepy, shall we say? Gifted man, though
