Othar Turner played a homemade bamboo cane fife or wooden flute. At 94 years old, Turner was the oldest and perhaps only living African-American fife player in America. He was also the leader of the Rising Star Fife and Drum Corp
"His music was recently featured in Martin Scorsese's Academy Award-nominated film Gangs of New York."
The original Otha. It's funny to see Sharde so young! She's almost 30 now and has her own group on tour.

Some of the best American music ever. Powerful stuff. This music digs down somewhere deep. So happy Othar got to get a Cd out and even happier that this type of music still lives on.

Great video! Sharde was in my 4th grade class and such a joy. I'm proud of the woman she has become. I loved listening to her play with her grandfather. Thanks for sharing this clip.
