Part 1 of a class taught by Ian Seenandan of Axia at the 2008 NY Tech Summit. The class discusses the operational challenges of designing and implementing the world's first and largest open-access network. The network was built in a large land mass (661,848 square kilometers) with a small population (3.2 million). The class explains what an open access network is and the benefits of such a network. It also discusses strategies Axia uses to reduce the operating costs of the network. It then moves into a discussion about the implementation of new technologies: the role of SONET/DWDM/ROADM and Optical Ethernet technologies in an IP network. The class concludes with current and future technology trends: how Axia views the role of IP as the medium that will change the delivery of media and how new networks will need to be engineered with Committed Access Rates.
