Music from Australia and New Zealand in the year 1985:

GANGgajang performing live on Rock Arena the hit single 'Sounds Of Then' taken from the 1985 album 'GANGgajang'.

In 1983, former Riptides (see NZOZ1982)frontman Mark "Cal" Callaghan teamed up with bassist Chris Bailey and drummer Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup - both former members of The Angels (or AngelCity). Together, the three musicians became the foundation of GANGgajang.

Unlike their previous groups (Riptides being Punk/New Wave and Angels being Rock), GANGgajang focused on a more organic-acoustic style of music and leaned towards Australiana.

  • This should be our national anthem

  • @Beerpiglet

You don't really believe Underbelly: Razor was historically correct, surely.

I also noticed all the music was "moden".

  • I was watching Underbelly razor & there was a woman singing this song in Kate Leigh,s sly grog shop. Surely this song was not originally written over 80yrs ago or has channel 9 fucked up & used a modern song?

  • To find out more about GANGgajang - where and when they're playing etc jump on board their official facebook page (ganggajang-official - can't post the link!)

and make sure you hit LIKE.

    See you there!

  • Great favourite, should be Queensland's state anthem!

  • @dweebcentric It is on The Essential GANGgajang cd. Was originally on Mad Wax surf dvd/video back in the late 80s...

  • @SouthJerseyMatt - there's a newer version, just the instrumental version. maybe on youtube? i can't remember where i found it.

  • Thanks for this - having grown up in Nthn NSW it really captures the atmosphere of summer. Needed a hit of this on Australia Day after working all day! Where can we view the vid with the canefields and big sounds we used to see on Count Down?

  • thanks again Nzoz, you're a legend... another one I worked on, vision mixer only, might have been Rob Pemberton directing. Sent the link to a few people today because "This is Australia'.
