As part of his visit to Turkey, President Barack Obama visited Aya Sofia on Tuesday. The building is both a former mosque and basilica. Obama is touring the building with the Turkish Prime Minister. (April 7)
After the conquest of Istanbul, Ayasofya became a Turkish religious center, so they were justified in plastering over the mosaics - you cannot interfere with that. Besides, the building was not destabilized unlike you claim - the building became more sound and survived to our date and many earthquakes - thanks to the Turkish restorations.
Yes you are corect about the restoration but u must add that most the restorations actualy stuffed the building even more. Also to add is the fact that all the beautiful mosaic tiles were either hacked with chisels, marble blocks with stunning depictions were ripped out even to the point of destabilizing the building. After a while they just simply re plastered over all the masterpeices of artwork on the walls. Yes I know what kind of restoration the Turks did when they were not plundering.

I hope Turks aren't preaching him the wrong history about their own nation... Just like they preach it to their own kids 24/7 in schools... :-P
