My response to Transport Canada's findings? http://gigababy.blogspot.com/2008/11/zenn-crash.html

Get rid of motorcycles if they try to ban the ZENN.

Transport Canada and Zenn Motor Co. have been arguing for months over mixing the company's low-speed electric vehicles with regular cars on city streets.

The Zenn (Zero emissions no noise) vehicle - which company CEO Ian Clifford says will hit Quebec roads by the end of December - came under scrutiny after a series of crash tests by Transport Canada were made public this week.

The dramatic footage - which raises concern over the safety of all low-speed vehicles - provoked a heated exchange between Transport Canada and Clifford, who is marketing the Zenn for use on roads with speed limits of 50 km/hour or lower.

Broadcast by the French TV network TVA, the footage showed the hoods flying off several low speed vehicles as they were crashed into a wall at 40 km/hr. Clifford defended the performance of the Zenn, which is assembled in St. Jérôme from chassis imported from France.

"Releasing these images without the statistical frame of reference is somewhat irresponsible on Transport Canada's part," fumed Clifford. "Our assessment is that low-speed vehicles are among the safest vehicles on the road. I drive our vehicles all the time. I drive the vehicles with my children."

  • Looks safer then a bicycle and a model-t so is perfectly fine!

  • I'm worried the detachable (plastic?) hood will scratch my SUV or possibly leave a nick in the windshield as I pass through this 'car' otherwise unaware of the contact.

  • @juice0935 only..wat bout 60mph/96km

  • 40kph in about 24mph

  • @Ferrari5746 looks like that was a neck breaking crash as well

  • so, stuff falls of the car when you hit something.. really?

  • 1:22 It was hit by a smart car...what if it was hit by a truck? o3o

  • @elchicoboy Rigid? Look at the side on view wheer the whole side is starting to collapse. And that's only at 25mph. Put it in an Ncap test and it's just going to crumple.

  • Airbags would be pointless in these cars because by the time there is enough force for one to be useful the whole structure has collapsed.

  • @jarail Nah - the paint and glass on your truck are probably much stronger than the materials this thing is made from. It'll just bounce off like a leaf.

  • Much of your footage is of vehicles that are used at Golf Courses or anywhere NOT on public roads. You cannot mix those in with the Zen and pretend they are the same.

  • that car is way rigid. but a 25 mph is not a test, at least for me. i mean who the hell crashes with a wall head on at 25 miles. i could even run. they can use the e-brake. standard now is 40. i rather do a higher speed like 55 mph test because most of the time cars go higher than that.
