There isn't a "back story" between Billy Vera and Judy Clay. He originally wanted to record it with Nona Hendryx but there were contractual issues so he did it with Judy Clay. Got that from a live interview he did on LAGenX radio. Billy never appeared on American Bandstand with Judy Clay. He didn't make it there till he was 42 after At This Moment became popular.
I am almost certain that their is a back story to this song. Both Vera and Clay seemed to be too involved and personal in theme of the song for it to be simply incidental. But what did I know at the time? I was nine years old, after all. They did appear on dick Clark's "American Bandstand" in 1967A.D. a year before "Guess who's Coming to Dinner?". Pretty radical for the times, as even older ppl who lived it would tell you.

In a fair world, Judy Clay would have been a much bigger recording star. She was soul to her core!
