This resnonates with what is happining today in the United States. The modern Roman Empire is now a shadow of what it once was. The goths have invaded and have destroyed the family unit. The founding fathers had a dream of what this country could be, and this is not it.

I find it very interesting that the main jist of Oliver Reed's words throughout the movie are "shadows and dust", and that in real life, he died before all of his scenes were finished being shot. It is this scene at :17, that appears during Proximo' death scene later in the movie, where he once again says "shadows and dust" and then is cut down. It had to be edited this way because there wasn't any other footage to work with.
